In this section we offer you a brief list of the places that, as far as we´re concerned, are places you truly shouldn´t miss when visiting Cantabria, be it for its cultural and historic interest as for its beauty and importance in the Central Coast of Cantabria.

We would also like to remember you that, when visiting open spaces, whatever type they may be, civic, ecological and humane education must guide our actions. • CABEZÓN DE LA SAL

Located in the village of Carrejo, offers a varied display of fauna and flora, and of the different ecosystems of Cantabria. With specimen of Golden Eagle, Eagle Owl and many more.

In the Summer: Tuesday to Saturday, from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 18:00.
In the rest of the year: Tuesday to Saturday, from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00.
Closed on Mondays, 1st and 6th of January, Good Friday, 1st of May and Christmast Day.

Built on the terraced slope of the hill, the square and round dwellings of this open-air museum have been built at full size, according to the data gathered in different archeological researches. Its thick and steep heather roofs (quite like those of a fairy tale village) are an example of the type of dwellings ancient Cantabrians and Europeans used to live in.
A walk through the inside of these houses, sitting by the hearth, close to the loom, the pottery, the implements and the weaponry will take us back through history to different eras, from the end of the Bronze Age (VIII century B.C.) to the Iron Age, until the appearance of historical Cantabrians, the ones who fought against the Roman legions in the times of Emperor Augustus.

The visit to the original cave, archeological jewel full of paintings, is restricted, and only permitted with passes issued beforehand by the Centre. But now there is an alternative, in the new Altamira Museum, the so-called Neocave, inaugurated in the Summer of 2001.

The new Museum offers different spaces devoted to permanent and temporary exhibitions, cultural activities, workshops and courses, a library, a shop, a restaurant, picnic area... There are also open-air activities complementing the contents of the exhibitions by the means of actual experimentation (workshops about wood carving, dart throwing, cave painting...). The Museum reproduces faithfully the sorroundings of the Cave during the Paleolithic Era -it is, in short, and entertaining and educational element of the first order.

• SAN VICENTE DE LA BARQUERA

Ancient fortress, centre of the defences of the walled precinct and the port. The current building dates back from 1210, year in which Alfonso VIII grants its "fuero" (municipal charter) to the Village, and has suffered many alterations through its life. Exhibitions are hosted inside it.

PROTECTED OPEN SPACES

• OYAMBRE NATURE PARK

5 Km. away from Comillas, this protected space was declared Nature Park back in 1988 in order to ensure the protection of one of the most interesting and beautiful areas in the Cantabrian coast. The Oyambre Nature Park is 5,000 hectares (12,355 acres) big, and that area is divided mainly among the municipalities of San Vicente de la Barquera, Valdáliga and Comillas. Oyambre is special because of its natural and landscape diversity, being a wonderful and full representation of the different ecosystems in the Cantabrian coast. We find two estuaries inside its boundaries, those of San Vicente de la Barquera and La Rabia, that are among the more valuable and best preserved in the whole Cantabrian Sea, with wide marsh lands that shelter a varied bird life, what turns Oyambre into an area of great ornithological interest. Besides, beach and dune ecosystems are represented by the wide sandy areas of Oyambre and Merón, miraculously preserved from urbanization. The rest of the Oyambre Park is formed by areas of beautifully wild cliffs, green meadowlands and little villages, landscapes over which tower the neighbouring Picos de Europa.

• MOUNT CORONA

This incredible natural spot is located inside the borders of the Udías municipality, around 15 min. distant from Comillas. There you can find perfectly preserved and spectacular pine groves where to relax amidst landscapes of great beauty. It is a place where family, friends and lovers can just have a quiet time and enjoy a good homemade meal in the stone tables and chairs that can be found all through the woods. And after a good lunch, there´s nothing better than laying down on a blanket and enjoying a restoring siesta, while above our heads squirrels jump from tree to tree and the singing of tawny owl can be heard, while goshawk and short-toed eagle cross the sky and rays of light come down through the branches of the trees. You can also decide to have a short walk and visit the two shrines that can be found inside the woods, and feel a sensation of peace and freedom so natural that you´ll find it difficult to ever forget this place. If you just want to enjoy a perfect day, don´t think twice and enter this realm of purity and quiet.

• SAJA WILDLIFE RESERVE

The Park is located inside the borders of the Ruente municipality, 6 Km. away from Cabezón de la Sal -30 min. away from Ubiarco- right in the middle of the Cabuérniga Valley. In the numerous restaurants of the sorroundings you can taste the trademark regional stew: the Cocido Montañés, or Mountain Stew, made with kidney beans, cabbage and pork meat, a recipe of well earned fame in this area. On the road leading to the so-called Ucieda Mountains, we can see a lovely humilladero, or road shrine, some country manors with their coats of arms, and at its end, discover the fascinating oak and beech woods that are the entrance to the Saja-Besaya Nature Park, inside the Saja National Wildlife Reserve, the biggest game reserve in Spain.

The Park, protected since 1988, treasures a most important amount of beerch and oak woods, where endangered species such as the Brown Bear, the otter, the capercaillie and the Golden Eagle live.

This place offers us the chance to use one its many stone grills in order to cook and have our lunch in the middle of the woods. Just a tip: buy a 5 Kg. coal bag in one of the petrol stations around Cabezón de la Sal in order to prepare some good live coals and grill our food with excellent results. To prepare some really good live coals, you must start a fire with small wood and tinder, that you can pick from the surroundings of the place chosen for your meal. Around the stone grills there are wooden tables and benches so that you can eat comfortably with your family. And after a satisfying lunch, you can walk around the Park, bathe in the river, and even play hide-and-seek like when you were children. We deeply recommend it, it´s a wonderful experience!

Every Wednesday the traditional cattle market takes place inside the Exhibition Site. Every Tuesday, there is a big street market in the sorroundings of the Cattle Exhibition Site.
