NATIVE SOUL
Cantabria is a region that boasts a neverending list of events celebrating its popular or folk culture, from one of its corners to the other, and all through the year, specially in the summertime.
In this section we try to show you some of the most important and traditional popular festivals of the Cantabrian villages, so that you can discover its history and its roots to the sound of the music of the romerías (pilgrimages) and verbenas (open-air dances), smelling the odour of the typical churros (flour fritters), or of the food being slowly cooked in the open air, feeling the emotion of the folk competitions, eating tapas in the most typical of bars...
And, of course, Ubiarco has its own festivals. Ancient songs and dances are performed in Santa Justa´s honour on the monday following Whitsun and on the 26th of July. The popular fervour raised by this event is such that it deserves its own particular section.
And here we offer you some of the most known and popular festivals, ordered depending on the month of the year they take place in. You just have to click on the period of time you´re interested in.

EATING AND DRINKING AROUND
- Santander´s great atmosphere
You can start the day the best way possible by having the typical appetizer (here, it is called "Tomar las 11", "Taking the 11"), drinking some white wine or vintage vermouth to go with the most traditional "tapas", tastes of native cuisine such as winkles, fried squids or mussels that you can find in the lively traditional popular bars of the areas of Peña Herbosa, Vargas, Grupo Amaro and Perines.
In the afternoon, for those in search of quiet, the cafés of the Paseo de Pereda, Plaza Pombo and El Sardinero (specially in the summertime), are the most interesting meeting places.
For the young and lively, Santander can offer an active nightlife that lasts into the small hours of the day (I can confirm it), and can find you sitting in front of a good cup of hot chocolate and a plateful of churros. You can start the night in the areas of Perines, Vargas or San Luis, and then go through those of Río de la Pila, Cañadío, Santa Lucía, or the more alternative Calle del Carmen, and end up in the discos of the streets.
- The alternative charms of Torrelavega
Torrelavega is indeed a good alternative, and the area around the San José street is the one where you can find a greater number of bars and pubs. In the weekend, Carrejo is the place to start (with a good glass of white wine) the journey for those who have arranged to have a good meal at one of the restaurants of the Cabuérniga Valley. Those who wish to enjoy their Saturday night gather in the town of Renedo; and Solares is your option for Sunday evenings.
- Nightlife in Suances
All throug the summer Cantabria becomes an important touristic centre, and seashore villages such as Comillas, and specially, Suances (5 km. distant from Ubiarco) offer an irresistible combination: nice beaches and a lively nightlife. Suances is a coastal town that bursts with life in the months of July and August and offers a wide variety of activities of all sorts. It´s the place to be when you think about eating well and having a good time; in fact, it´s typical to go out into the small hours of the day every wednesday and saturday night. You start with a nice dinner in any of its renowned seaside restaurants, and then make your way through wine bars, open-air pubs and discos. Before you realize that time has been passing, the stars have faded from the sky and the sun is back, while your feet still dance to the rythm of the music...
